it must be pointed out in favour of christendoms religions that they do not discriminate against people regarding their religious beliefs.
many old age jehovah`s witnesses are residents of christendoms age care homes.. isn`t this a conunudrum ?
they, jw`s condemn christendom as part of the world empire of false religion and they cast off their old faithful members to their enemy christendom , to look after them without lifting a finger themselves.. in the meantime they are raking in millions of dollars $$$$ in selling off real estate properties in new york and elsewhere around the world.
When I asked an elder in my old congregation who 'phoned me, "How's old Brother Abandoned getting on in the (worldly) nursing home?," he replied, "I don't know, but Brother Joe Publisher visits him every week."
Brother Joe Publisher visited all the elderly ones. Saved the elders from doing it! Nuff said about "shepherds."

@ Berrygerry - When I was an active JW, the one topic which always stimulated conversation between JW.'s and got them excited was speculation about the timing of the G.T/Armageddon.
When it comes to alleged "new lights," everyone here, active J.W.'s - including your mother, should never forget this "carved in stone" truth; if it doesn't appear in something printed by the WTBTS, then they didn't say it.

My instincts are telling me that the sheep in the USA (followed very quickly by every other congregation worldwide) are being primed for the consolidation/merging "master plan" (TM) going into warp-drive in 2018/19.
The "friends" in the U.S. think nothing of driving long distances (in comparison to UK JW's) and they pay a lot less for their petrol/diesel. If U.S. Witnesses get upset, I can't wait to see how the U.K./European sheeple will respond.

if my memory serves me right in the 80's there was an effort to call on those who were disfellowshipped.
elders would seek them out (or we're supposed to) to see if there was anything they could do to help them come back.
it seemed like a good idea at the time to me.
Maybe a number of faithful publishers were troubled by the blatant "one law for some and another law for others" and were asking the org a very troublesome question:
"The organization forbids publishers from trying to encourage their disfellowshipped loved one to return to the org, but encourages elders to do so. Where is the scriptural guidance/principle for this contradiction?"

the congregation i belonged to never had much time for me anyway, i said once i could drop down dead in the k.hall and no one would notice.
so i never expected anyone to be particularly bothered that i wasn't there and they aren't.
So sorry that you're hurting because of the shunning. That's what the shunning's supposed to do - hurt you so much that you want to crawl back on your hands and knees and beg the shunners to forgive you.
We should mourn that our blinded shunners are unable/unwilling to assimilate any of the information which exposes their beloved organization, and not that we've lost such cult-directed friendships. It hurts to know that sincere love and compassion can be repaid in such an inhuman way. I hope you make new and better friends soon.

Sadly, most J.W.'s realise too late that they don't have to discuss their private lives with the elders - or anyone else for that matter. Quietly tell one of these wolves that you don't wish to discuss your private & personal situation with anyone at the moment. DO NOT SPEAK WITH 2 ELDERS AT THE SAME TIME! Politely inform him that you have done nothing which requires elders involvement.
The elders reaction to your positive stance will prove that J.W.'s are cult-driven. Time for you to leave and be thankful you didn't get in deeper. Many here will envy you. Best wishes.
